Mentoring Matters, Here’s Why
It can be rough out there. Big Sisters provides supportive mentoring relationships to young girls who may be facing challenges like bullying, isolation, poverty, abuse, social anxiety, low self-esteem and more.
Research shows that mentoring has a powerful impact on the lives of young girls. We know that 96 percent of adults who had a mentor as a child say they are happy and 92 percent feel confident. Plus, girls who have a positive mentor are less likely to engage in destructive behaviour such as bullying, fighting, binge drinking or drug use.
Since 1960, Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland has been changing the course of young girls’ lives. Our experienced caseworkers carefully match Little Sisters with female adult mentors who help them reach their full potential, avoid risky behaviour and make healthy choices.
Here are a few ways you can be part of the impact we have on vulnerable girls in the Lower Mainland.

Attend an Event
Our annual fundraising events not only bring in necessary funds for our programs, they’re fun and inspiring! Upcoming in March, we’re hosting our Spring Lunch event where we’re delighted to feature a Harvard-trained psychiatrist, award-winning academic and #1 best-selling author who routinely “prescribes” Big Sisters to many girls to help them achieve optimal health and wellbeing. Don’t miss Dr. Shimi Kang’s talk about how mentoring, contributing and connecting are among our most powerful antidepressants.
Can’t attend? Why not host your own event and donate the proceeds to help us reach the 174 girls waiting for a Big Sister.
