International Mentoring Day: Celebrating the Power of Mentorship

Today is International Mentoring Day, a celebration of the incredible power of mentorship. This day recognizes the invaluable contributions mentors make to the lives of others and promotes the idea that mentorship is a two-way street—an opportunity for growth, learning, and inspiration for both mentor and mentee.

This year also marks the 65th anniversary of Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. That’s 65 years of support for girls and gender-diverse youth that predates the Moon Landing, The Beatles first record, and even women’s full right to vote in Canada.

Throughout this month, we will be celebrating the power of mentorship and sharing the stories of how mentors have been transforming the lives of youth in our community. Despite the progress made over the years, the need for mentors is greater than ever. Over 2 million young Canadians are growing up without a mentor—a gap that we have the power to close together.

Every young person, no matter her background or life circumstances, deserves the chance to reach their full potential. Mentors play a crucial role in making this happen, offering guidance, encouragement, and the kind of support that can help turn dreams into reality. Since Big Sisters was founded we have seen Réjane Laberge-Colas become the first woman appointed as a judge to a superior court, Kim Campbell become the first female Prime Minister of Canada, and Dr. Roberta Bondar become the first Canadian woman astronaut sent to space.

Many of the young people we work with through our Big Sisters and Study Buddy programs go on to post-secondary education, supported by our Bright Futures Education Fund. The combination of financial support and mentorship removes barriers and keeps them on a path toward a bright future.

By making connections between mentors and youth, we can build a world where every young person feels empowered to chase their dreams.

Mentorship in Action: Aria’s Story

Aria’s journey is an amazing example of the transformative impact of mentorship. When she was eight, she faced bullying and other difficulties at school. Through the support of her Big Sister Nadia, and later Sinead, Aria has been able to improve her academic performance and find happiness again.

Mentorship in Action: Ayva’s Story

Ayva’s mentor Megan has played an important role in helping her find her voice. With someone to listen, guide, and encourage her, Ayva has found the courage to pursue her passion for creativity. Before, she didn’t want to talk to people and would rather climb a tree or read a book. Now, she feels confident, supported, and seen.
