Become a Volunteer Mentor At Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, we believe in the power of mentorship to transform lives. Our four unique programs cater to self-identifying girls, non-binary, transgender, and gender-diverse youth, offering a range of opportunities to make a meaningful impact. Whether you're interested in one-on-one mentoring or group facilitation, there’s a place for you to shine!
Understanding the Difference: 1:1 Mentoring vs. Group Mentoring
When considering volunteering with Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, it’s important to understand the two mentoring formats we offer: 1:1 Mentoring and Group Mentoring. Each format provides unique opportunities and benefits, catering to different interests and preferences.
1:1 Mentoring
In the 1:1 Mentoring program, you will be matched with a single youth, allowing you to build a deep, personalized relationship. Activities can range from casual outings to focused discussions, making it a versatile option for both mentors and mentees.
Who it’s for:
- Individuals who enjoy building strong, lasting relationships and want to make a direct impact on a single youth’s life.
- Those who prefer personalized interactions and are excited to support the unique goals and challenges of their mentee.
- Volunteers who can commit to spending time with their match weekly for an extended period of time
Group Mentoring
In Group Mentoring, you’ll work as part of a team with 2-3 other mentors to facilitate sessions for a group of 8-10 participants. Group mentoring often includes structured activities that promote discussion, skill-building, and personal development.
Who it’s for:
- Individuals who thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy engaging with multiple youth simultaneously.
- Those interested in facilitating discussions and activities that promote shared learning experiences.
- Volunteers who can commit to a series of structured sessions over a defined term (e.g., 8 weeks).
Choosing the Right Program Fit for You
When deciding between 1:1 and Group Mentoring, consider your personal strengths, availability, and preferences. If you’re passionate about forming a strong bond and directly influencing one young person’s life, 1:1 Mentoring may be the ideal fit. On the other hand, if you enjoy working as part of a team and are excited to engage with a group of youth, Group Mentoring could be more aligned with your interests.
